Food synergy vs cancer

I guess I’m behind the times.  Until I started writing this website (2010), I had never heard of ‘food synergy’.  I’ve heard of synergy before, but never relating to food.  This is why I love google.  I was on one of many websites looking for foods rich in Iron and there were those words………’food synergy’.   It’s ironic how websites that write about food synergy have differing opinions about what foods to put together to make two or more foods work as one powerful food.   For instance, one site says that greens, like spinach, don’t have that much iron, while other sites say it is loaded with iron.  In MY opinion, I have always been taught that fresh spinach is iron rich and that’s why Tom eats fresh spinach, along with several other fresh vegetables, every night with dinner.
It certainly can’t hurt.  (We never eat canned foods because they have been processed and most of the nutrients have been removed).

Food synergy is:  two or more nutritious foods eaten together can be more beneficial then each food eaten on its own.            For instance, make a salad  with Romaine lettuce, fresh baby spinach, tomato, fresh orange slices (or any fresh fruit) and top it with olive oil and nuts (preferably  almonds, pecans or black walnuts).    The Romaine lettuce has fiber and vitamins A, B and K.  (Iceberg lettuce has little nutritional value).  Tomatoes are rich in an antioxidant called lycopene which has been proven to reduce certain cancers.  Fresh spinach has iron.  Fresh orange slices have extremely high levels of vitamin C, a very powerful antioxidant (more than any other fruit except pomegranates).  Top off the salad with a healthy fat with Omega-3’s like almonds, pecans, cashews, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts or avocado slices.  The vitamin C in the orange slices makes it easier for your body to absorb all the vitamins and minerals in foods.

NEVER just eat from “one” food group and ignore the other food groups.  Let’s say you need extra iron and you find that foods “X, Y and Z” are loaded with iron.  If you eat ONLY from that food group and not eat from the others, you will throw your body out of balance and that could be very dangerous.  Your body needs a balanced diet.
