CANCER FIGHTING FOODS
Foods highly alkaline and / or are high in antioxidants

C- cancer fighting foods #1Below is a list of “cancer fighting foods”.  If you google ‘cancer fighting foods’, hundreds of pages will come up with a lot more information. The best ‘cancer fighting foods’ are those that are ORGANICALLY GROWN and highly alkaline and have a high content of antioxidants.  An alkaline body has too much oxygen in the blood which prevents cancer cells from growing.  An acidic body is oxygen deprived and allows cancer cells to grow.   Antioxidants kill “free-radicals”.   Free radicals attach themselves to healthy cells and destroy them allowing cancer cells to grow.

While no one food can act as a magic weapon against cancer, different foods working together,  in  the body, can help fight against or prevent cancer. (1)    This is called “Food Synergy”.

C- cancer fighting fruits #1ORGANIC FRESH FRUITS AND BERRIES:
All types of berries and grapes (especially those that are red or blue in color) can  help prevent cancer because they contain substances called phytochemicals that destroy cancer cells.  Grapes contain Resveratrol, a type of natural chemical that blocks the growth of cancer cells.  The berries that have the most antioxidants  are fresh blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and  watermelon.  The pomegranate, though, has more antioxidants than any other fruit.  Other fruits that are high in antioxidants and are alkaline are raisins, pears, apples, cherries, fresh coconut, over ripe bananas (the ones with all the brown spots, NOT those pretty yellow ones), pineapple, avocado, grapefruit, lemon, limes, dates, figs, melons, kiwi, mango, passion fruit, plums, apricots, currants, nectarines, guavas and papaya. (1)    Make sure you eat the skins of fruits that have an edible skin because 90% of the nutrients are in the skin. Try to eat as many fresh fruits as possible throughout the day.  Even though fruits are acidic in their natural state, (especially fruits high in vitamin C), once they get into your intestinal track they become alkaline.  Always try to buy organic.   Organically grown foods are pesticide-free.    MORE INFORMATION ON THE BOTTOM.
To go along with healthy fruits, try juice concentrates.  NOT pre-made with added sugar.  Concentrates are just the juice of the fruit.  They contain NO added sugar or sugar substitutes, preservatives or chemicals.  Just add purified water and pure Stevia.
I buy mine at The Vitamin Shoppe.

                                             ORGANIC FRESH VEGETABLES:
C- cancer fighting veg's #1Green leafy vegetables such as fresh spinach and kale have a substance called chlorophyllin which can help prevent cancer.  Fresh spinach is also high in antioxidants. (1)   Foods that are highly alkaline and help fight cancer are:  okra, ripe olives, peas, asparagus, raw carrots, broccoli, celery, all bell peppers, watercress, pumpkin, fresh green beans, beets, lettuce, squash, turnips, red onions, alfalfa sprouts, seaweeds, mushrooms, garlic, red cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes (raw and cooked), cauliflower, radishes, eggplant and boiled sweet potato.  Try to eat as many fresh, organic vegetables as possible throughout the day.  If you must cook them, always steam vegetables leaving them al dente, or a little bit undercooked.  Steaming will still remove some nutrients but boiling them removes most of their nutrients. Never boil them.    Always try to buy organic. Organic foods are pesticide free.  MORE INFORMATION ON THE BOTTOM.

raw cacao pic 19 ORGANIC RAW CACAO (not cocoa):
Raw cacao has more antioxidants than any food on earth.  It contains over 25,000 antioxidants in one teaspoonful.  It contains 955 ORAC Units in each gram,  (ORAC: Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).     ORAC is a way to measure the ability of antioxidants to kill free radicals.   Cacao is very high in magnesium.  It contains only trace amounts of caffeine (for those on a caffeine-free diet).  Raw cacao can be stored in the freezer, in an air tight container, for up to 6 months.   It doesn’t have a long shelf life in the store though.  If you open the container and smell the overwhelming odor of vinegar, it’s probably bad and it’s probably not a high quality cacao.   That’s what happened to me the first time I bought it. I returned it and bought a more expensive brand at another health food store.  When I opened that one it smelled like dark chocolate.

ORGANIC NUTS AND SEEDS:
such as flax seed, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, chestnuts and macadamia nuts have high amounts of antioxidants.  Two of those antioxidants – quercetin and campferol – may suppress cancer cell growth.  {If you do not eat organic nuts and seeds, it is recommended that you do NOT eat peanuts, pistachios, brazil nuts or cashews as these nuts may have a carcinogenic (cancer causing) mold on them called Aflatoxin.  Plus, peanuts contain more pesticides than any other nut}. Those nuts should be organic.
Although chia seeds are very healthy for most people to eat, a man who NOW has or EVER had prostate cancer, or has a family history of it, can NOT eat chia seeds. Flax seeds are a much better choice. They can help maintain the health of the prostate.

DRY BEANS:
All legumes (pinto beans, black beans, red beans, kidney beans, lentils, great northern beans, chick peas, black eyed peas and peas) contain high amounts of antioxidants. (1)   They are also acidic though so eat in moderation.  When you eat beans, eat a food that is very high in antioxidants.  Dry beans may have a high carb count but a low ‘net carb or digestible carb’ count.  They are healthy carbs.  They digest very slowly and are low on the glycemic index.

SPICES & SEASONINGS:
Sea salt or *Himalayan Pink Salt (NOT table salt), organic cinnamon, garlic, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, curry, ginger, cayenne, turmeric, cloves, thyme, cumin, saffron, nutmeg, parsley, oregano, cilantro, basil and mustard seeds (basically all herbs) are all highly alkaline. (1) (5).

FLAXSEED & MILLET:
Eat breads made of these flours in place of any other type of bread.  ALL other breads start with wheat.  Read the package label on ANY bread.  Stay away from wheat.  There are other breads made with corn and white rice but Tom can’t eat either.  Flaxseeds have magnesium, fiber, manganese, thiamin, protein, copper and selenium. (3)        Millet has protein, the amino acid lysine, B vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and folate.   It also has the minerals magnesium, zinc, copper and iron. (4)   Flax and millet are complete or essential carbs; the healthy ones.

ORGANIC GREEN TEA:
Caffeine-free, organic green tea contains potent antioxidants. (3)  Up to three cups per day help neutralize free radicals. (6)  Add a slice or more of an organic lemon or lime to make it alkaline.

ORGANIC EGGS:
Eggs are NOT a cancer fighting food but I didn’t have a category to put them under.  Egg yokes are highly alkaline but are also high in cholesterol and fat.  We eat organic eggs from free-range hens that are fed an all-natural diet, including flaxseed, to make the necessary Omega3 fatty acids.   They are not given  hormones, steroids or antibiotics.  We only eat the egg whites though, but that is a personal preference.

COOKING OIL:
After doing a lot of research I think the healthiest oils are organic first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil,  organic avocado oil and organic grapeseed oil. For deep frying, using grapeseed oil or avocado oil is safer as they can withstand a higher temperature before they start smoking.  Olive Oil is ideal for salad dressing and low heat cooking.  Olive oil, avocado oil  and grapeseed oil are great for high heat cooking.  Most other oils are soy, peanut, vegetable (soy) or corn based.  (Tom can’t have any of those).    I don’t deep fry any foods, but if YOU do ***PLEASE USE THE OIL ONLY ONE TIME.  USING IT REPEATEDLY, OR ADDING NEW OIL TO OLD OIL, WILL CAUSE THE OIL TO BECOME CARCINOGENIC.  A CARCINOGEN IS A SUBSTANCE CAPABLE OF CAUSING CANCER IN HEALTHY TISSUE.*** (4)

QUINOA:
In my opinion I think the most important ‘cancer fighting food’ isn’t even a food……….it’s considered a seed or grain called quinoa (pronounced keen-wah).   My husband and I eat organic quinoa every day.  Quinoa has an abundance of vitamins and minerals.  It is sodium-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, sugar-free and  saturated fat-free.  It is high in fiber, high in anti-oxidants, has no cholesterol and even helps lower cholesterol levels.  Quinoa is a little high in carbohydrates but they are NOT empty carbs, they are complex carbs; the kind of carbs that keep your body functioning.

{THERE IS A WARNING WITH QUINOA THOUGH:  YOU CAN NOT EAT IT IF YOU HAVE OR HAD KIDNEY STONES CONTAINING OXALATE}.
