**Cancer Fighting Foods

Foods highly alkaline and / or have high amounts of antioxidants

Below is a list of what are called “cancer fighting foods”.  If you google ‘cancer fighting foods’ hundreds of pages will come up with a lot more information.   The best ‘cancer fighting foods’ are those that are ORGANICALLY GROWN and highly alkaline and / or have high amounts of antioxidants.  An alkaline body has too much oxygen in the blood which prevents cancer cells from growing.  An acidic body is oxygen deprived and allows cancer cells to grow.   Antioxidants kill “free-radicals”.   Free radicals attach themselves to healthy cells and destroy them allowing cancer cells to grow.

While no one food can act as a magic weapon against cancer, different foods working together,  in  the body, can help fight against or prevent cancer. (1)    This is called “Food Synergy”.

berry_mix pic 14ORGANIC FRESH FRUITS AND BERRIES:  All types of berries and grapes (especially those that are red or blue in color) can help prevent cancer because they contain substances called phytochemicals that destroy cancer cells.  Grapes contain Reservatrol, a type of natural chemical that blocks the growth of cancer cells.  The berries that have the most antioxidants  are fresh blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and  watermelon.  The pomegranate, though, has more antioxidants than any other fruit.  Other fruits that are high in antioxidants and are alkaline are raisins, pears, apples, cherries, fresh coconut, over ripe bananas (the ones with all the brown spots, NOT those pretty yellow ones), pineapple, avocado, grapefruit, lemon, limes, dates, figs, melons, kiwi, mango, passionfruit, plums, apricots, currants, nectarines, guavas and papaya. (1)    Make sure you eat the skins of fruits that have an edible skin because 95% of the nutrients are in the skin. Try to eat as many fresh fruits as possible throughout the day.  Even though fruits are acidic in their natural state, (especially fruits high in vitamin C), once they get into your intestinal track they become alkaline.  Always try to buy organic.   Organically grown foods are pesticide-free.    MORE INFORMATION ON THE BOTTOM.

ORGANIC FRESH VEGETABLES:     Green leafy vegetables such as fresh spinach and kale have a substance called chlorophyllin which can help prevent cancer.  Fresh spinach is also high in antioxidants. (1)   Foods that are highly alkaline and help fight cancer are:  okra, ripe olives, peas, asparagus, raw carrots, broccoli, celery, all bell peppers, watercress, pumpkin, fresh green beans, beets, lettuce, squash, turnips, red onions, alfalfa sprouts, seaweeds, mushrooms, garlic, red cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes (raw & cooked), cauliflower, radishes, eggplant and baked sweet potato NOT a white potato.  White potatoes, like white rice, turn into sugar. (2)   Try to eat as many fresh, organic vegetables as possible throughout the day.  If you must cook them, always steam vegetables leaving them a little bit undercooked.   You could also flash-fry them in a wok using a healthy oil like olive oil).  Steaming will still remove some nutrients but boiling them removes most of their nutrients. Never boil them.  Flash-frying cooks them quickly leaving most of the nutrients in the vegetable.  Always try to buy organic. Organic foods are pesticide free.  MORE INFORMATION ON THE BOTTOM.

raw cacao pic 19 ORGANIC RAW CACAO (not cocoa):  Raw cacao has more antioxidants than any food on earth.  It contains over 25,000 antioxidants in one teaspoonful.  It contains 955 ORAC Units in each gram,  (ORAC: Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).     ORAC is a way to measure the ability of antioxidants to kill free radicals.   Cacao is very high in magnesium.  It contains only trace amounts of caffeine (for those on a caffeine-free diet).  Raw cacao can be stored in the freezer, in an air tight container, for up to 6 months.   It doesn’t have a long shelf life in the store though.  If you open the container and smell the overwhelming oder of vinegar, it’s probably bad and it’s probably not a high quality cacao.   That’s what happened to me the first time I bought it. I returned it and bought a more expensive brand at another health food store.  When I opened that one it smelled like dark chocolate.

NUTS AND SEEDS:    such as flaxseed, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans,   chestnuts & macadamia nuts have high amounts of antioxidants.  Two of those antioxidants – quercetin and campferol – may suppress cancer cell growth.  {It is recommended that you do NOT eat peanuts, pistachios, brazil nuts or cashews as these nuts may have a carcinogenic cancer causing mold on them called Aflatoxin.  Plus, peanuts contain more pesticides than any other nut}.  Also, although chia seeds are very healthy for most people to eat, a man who NOW has or EVER had prostate cancer, or has a family history of it, can NOT eat chia seeds.  Chia Oil is high in alpha-linolenic acid which could increase the risk of prostate cancer.  ALA plays a role in carcinogenesis, which is defined as the “initiation of cancer formation”.

DRY BEANS:   All legumes (pinto beans, black beans, red beans, kidney beans, lentils, great northern beans, chick peas, black eyed peas and peas) contain high amounts of antioxidants. (1)   They are also acidic though so eat in moderation.  When you eat beans, eat a food that is very high in antioxidants.  Dry beans may have a high carb count but a low ‘net carb or digestible carb’ count.  They are healthy carbs.  They digest very slowly and are low on the glycemic index.

SPICES & SEASONINGS:     Sea salt (NOT table salt), cinnamon, garlic, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, curry, ginger, cayenne, miso, all herbs, turmeric, cloves, thyme, cumin, saffron, nutmeg, parsley, oregano, cilantro, basil, mustard seeds are all highly alkaline. (1) (5)

FLAXSEED & MILLET:   Use breads made of these flours in place of any other type of bread.  Flaxseeds have fiber, magnesium, manganese, thiamin, protein, copper and selenium. (3)                   Millet has protein, the amino acid lysine, B vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and folate.   It also has the minerals magnesium, zinc, copper and iron. (4)   Flax and millet are complete or essential carbs; the healthy ones. White flour is an empty carb and turns into sugar in the body.  All other breads begin with white flour.

ORGANIC GREEN TEA:    Caffeine-free, organic green tea contains potent antioxidants. (3)  Three cups per day help neutralize free radicals. (6)

ORGANIC EGGS:     Eggs are NOT a cancer fighting food but I didn’t have a catagory to put them under.  Egg yokes are alkaline though.  We eat organic eggs from free-range hens that are fed an all natural diet, including flaxseed, to make the necessary Omega3 fatty acids.   They are not given  hormones, steroids or antibiotics.  We only eat the egg whites, but that is a personal choice.

COOKING OIL:     After doing a lot of research I think the healthiest oil to cook with is First Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  Plus olive oil is alkaline and very healthy for you.  Most other oils are soy, peanut or corn based.  (Tom can’t have any of those).    I don’t deep fry any foods, but if YOU do ***PLEASE USE THE OIL ONLY ONE TIME.  USING IT REPEATEDLY, OR ADDING NEW OIL TO OLD OIL, WILL CAUSE THE OIL TO BECOME CARCINOGENIC.  A CARCINOGEN IS A SUBSTANCE CAPABLE OF CAUSING CANCER IN LIVING TISSUE.*** (4)                  I just discovered a website:  www.WellnessMama.com   One page discusses all cooking oils from the worst to the best.  Please visit her site to learn a tremendous amount of information.  There is a ‘search box’ on the top right.  Type in “vegetable oils”.  There will be a drop-down box that will say, “WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT VEGETABLE OIL OR MARGARINE”.  Click on that and it will bring you to the page.

QUINOA:  In my opinion I think the most important ‘cancer fighting food’ isn’t even a food……….it’s considered a seed or grain called quinoa (pronounced keen-wah).   My husband and I eat organic quinoa every day.  Quinoa has an abundance of vitamins and minerals.  It is sodium-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, sugar-free and  saturated fat-free.   It is high in fiber, high in anti-oxidants, has no cholesterol and even helps lower cholesterol levels.  Quinoa is a little high in carbohydrates but they are NOT empty carbs, they are complex carbs; the kind of carbs that keep your body functioning.

{THERE IS A WARNING WITH QUINOA THOUGH:  YOU CAN NOT EAT IT IF YOU HAVE OR HAD KIDNEY STONES CONTAINING OXALATE}.

FROM THE TOP –  FRUITS – WHY BUY ORGANIC:                                                   All fruit you eat should be organically grown.  The following non-organic fruits have more pesticides than any other fruits.                                                                                                                               GRAPES:  Imported grapes have more than 30 different pesticides on them.  Raisins contain pesticide residue.  How does this effect residue in wine?     STRAWBERRIES:  have more than 60 different pesticides.                          APPLES:  have over 40 chemicals.  Applesauce and apple juice also contained pesticide residue.                                                                                            PEACHES:  have over 60 pesticides.                                                      NECTARINES:  contain over 33 different pesticides.                          BLUEBERRIES:  have over 50 different pesticides.

FROM THE TOP –  VEGETABLES – WHY BUY ORGANIC:                      All vegetables you eat should be organically grown.  The following                   non-organic vegetables have more pesticides than any other vegetables.

CUCUMBER:  has 35 different  pesticides on them.                                     COLLARD GAREENS:   have more than 45 different pesticides.                 LETTUCE:  has more than 50 different pesticides.                                  POTATOES:  have more than 35 different pesticides.                                            SPINACH:  has 50 different chemical pesticides.                                               CELERY:  has over 60 different pesticides.                                                           BELL PEPPERS: (all colors):  have almost 50 varieties of chemicals.               KALE, CHERRY TOMATOES, HOT PEPPERS, ZUCCHINI:  all contain chemical pesticides buy no number amount was given.

LIST OF FRUITS & VEGETABLES “LOWEST” IN PESTICIDE RESIDUE:

Pineapple, avacado, mango, papayas, cantaloupe (domestic), kiwi, watermellon  & grapefruit.

Onions, sweet corn (GMO), asparagus, frozen sweet peas, egg plant, cabbage, sweet potatoes & mushrooms.

A FEW MORE INTERESTING PIECES OF INFORMATION:

MILK:   12 different pesticides and other man-made chemicals have been found in dairy products.

BEEF:  No pesticides were found in beef muscle, but were found in beef fat.  These pesticides accumulate in human fat.  Also, pork fat and chicken thighs have the most pesticide residue.  Lean meat came up clean.

  1. Jean! You’re the reigning “Quinoa Queen!” Thank you so much for sharing this information!! It’s fantastically thorough, helpful and precise – very impressive!!! I’m so pleased your research and dietary changes have helped Tom and I know this information will help a lot of other people, too. In fact, it’s so good that I’ve included a link to your site on my website’s link page to help get the word out. Best wishes and I hope to see you both again very soon!! XO

  2. All good and yummy stuff. Just a couple of suggestions .. 1) Wok cooking was one of the primary ways my Mom used to cook veggies .. because it flash cooked them on the outside, thereby retaining the nutrients. You might try that as an alternate to steaming. In Wok cooking, different oils and seasonings may be used as well, or not, according to your preference. 2) Organic sources for every fruit and veg and nut and oil is suggested. Or grow your own .. hydroponic indoor gardens are pest free, pollutant free, etc. And you can use an organic liquid fertilizer .. and monitor the *PH* as you desire.
